What is salt sugar solution? – This is a specially prepared drink containing certain quantity of salt (electrolytes) and sugar (glucose) in specific proportions, so formulated to replace the water and electrolytes lost to dehydration from diarrhoea and vomiting. It is a home-made solution in place of the over-the-counter oral rehydrated solution (ORS), especially for children.

What is the function of salt sugar solution?

Its function is to prevent severe damage to the organs of the body occasioned by dehydration. 

How is salt sugar solution prepared?

Salt sugar solution can be prepared following these steps:

  1. Get 1 litre of clean water which is safe to drink
  2. Add 8 level teaspoon or 4 cubes of sugar
  3. Add ½ teaspoon of salt
  4. Mix well by stirring the mixture well until they dissolve completely

How is salt sugar solution given?

Salt sugar solution is given with cup and spoon. The volume given depends on the age / weight of the child.

In what conditions is salt sugar solution used?

ORS is useful in any situation which may predispose someone, especially children, to dehydration such as:

Is ORS useful for everybody?

ORS is good for conditions that may lead to dehydration. Though commonly used for children, it can be useful for adults as well. However, some medical conditions may make ORS unsuitable for use by a certain category of people such as those with:
